Welcome to the Character Gallery of Chinese and Japanese Calligraphy.

These characters are written with traditional Asian calligraphy tools of ground inks and animal hair brushes on mulberry rice paper. The words have been selected because they will translate from English into both Chinese and Japanese use. This gallery should be used as a resource for both style and definition as these characters are designed to be partnered with other original art found in the Licensing Gallery. They many also be purchased individually and special request orders are available upon request. The characters are identified and labeled by their script style. All Chinese characters developed from early drawings, known as Seal script. Like Egyptian hieroglyphs these pictures represented what the word meant, as with three vertical wavy lines for water. Seal script developed into the masculine looking, structured script used for recording history and writing documents, hence being called Lishu, meaning Official script. The Regular script of today has been modified and is the one used in print, called Regular script, or Kaishu. The two freely written cursive forms may appear random and spontaneous, but are actually very structured, and often difficult to read are called Running script, Xinhshu, and Grass script known as Caoshu.
